Being the Community and Environment Trust on the island, we pursue projects which benefit the community and its environment, both people and nature. Welfare of the community goes hand-in-hand with the health of the habitat for wildlife, because of people’s connection to nature and the wellness benefits of engaging in the environment.
Over time SIRCET has hosted various events; plant identification courses, conservation art workshops, bake sales and morning teas, working bees in the environment (to name a few), and engaged landowners and local volunteers to join in our efforts to protect the wildlife of the township.
We enjoy our work with local Halfmoon Bay School to help enhance their Enviroschool initiatives; they’re currently finalists in several awards which recognise their conservation efforts! The rat trapping they do weekly in term time helps secure the perimeter of our project area and we’ve been delighted to team up with the NZ Penguin Initiative to deliver a monitoring project with the kids for the kororā blue penguin population in the core zone of our project area also.
